Udaipur: The City with a Rich Tradition and a Glorious Past

 Udaipur, a city in Rajasthan, is steeped in tradition and has a rich history. Udaipur used to be the capital of the Mewar dynasty, and the town was established by Maharana Uday Singh II in 1559. The city has earned many epithets to its credit like the ‘Venice of the East, and ‘Lake City, but its most prominent nickname is ‘The City of Palaces.’ The city is well-known throughout the world for its lakes. Its palaces mainly were built during the Rajput era.

Udaipur is situated in Southern Rajasthan and is located at 1,962 ft above sea level. The best time to visit Udaipur is from the middle of September till early April. Udaipur has a continental climate with sweltering and dry summers and chilly winters with scanty rainfall. But the days remain sunny throughout the year.

Udaipur attracts tourists from all over the world because of its numerous historical sites, especially palaces and lakes. Many of the courts have now been converted to imposing hotels and resorts that are booked by celebrities for staging high-profile parties and marriage ceremonies.

City Palace

The City Palace, which flanks Lake Pichola, is a cluster of palaces built in an integrated manner since 1559. One gets splendid views of the Lake Palace Hotel (Jag Niwas) from the numerous galleries of the courts. Visit the Suraj Gokhda, Mor-Chok, or the Peacock Courtyard. The castles hold a rich treasure trove of paintings, antique furniture, and other memorabilia.

As the name gives away, it served as a repository for rainwater and met the water needs of the inhabitants throughout the year. It also doubled up as a summer resort for Maharajas. It is situated on top of a hill and offers a bird’s eye view of the entire city.

Lake Palace

Built around the 1740s, the Lake Palace used to be a regal summer palace. But now it serves as a luxury hotel. It is situated in Lake Pichola.

Jagdish Temple

The Jagdish Temple was constructed by Maharana Jagat Singh in the year 1651. It is a splendid specimen of Indo-Aryan architecture. It lies in the city's heart, and the area surrounding the temple is the principal tourist area of Udaipur.

Fateh Sagar Lake

Fateh Sagar Lake is on the northern fringe of Lake Pichola. It was built in 1678 AD by Maharana Jai Singh, but Maharana Fateh Singh made refurbishment and extensions later on after heavy damage was caused due to excessive rainfall.

Many other spots in Udaipur will hold you in thrall. Those are Lake Pichola, Gulab Bagh, Bharatiya Lok Kala Mandal, Maharana Pratap Memorial, Nehru Garden, Udaipur Solar Observatory, etc. Udaipur is well-connected by road, rail, and air.
